What's wrong is that he spent several years and an insane amount of chapters to build up to this. And then he basically laid it aside and went "this is never going to matter again, so why did you wait for it in the first place?"
It's not that he can't pull off some things in one issue. 88, for example, was stunning.
But he sure didn't do it here.
It felt like he said oh, okay, Soul needs to be balanced so let's just throw this away because I want to do something else. Character development? What's that? It's off screen!
I don't think any of that's actually what he said. My theory is that he meant to have 88 and 84 compare and contrast and he really did want to do this right. He's done compare/contrast with elements before. But it ended up pretty poor here. He's always experimental and I guess his experiment didn't work out.
