Jun. 23rd, 2011 07:46 amSo I've been sitting here for awhile going "well, DC comics is pretty awesome, why did it suddenly start getting awesome around last winter?" Then today, I wrote this post on plurk with my feelings on Marvel's publishing practices, and I found out that I was wrong about how DC publishes.
I knew that they made Geoff Johns the Chief Creative Officer in 2010 and I attributed (and still do) that to part of why DC has become a lot more appealing to me again.
But for some reason I was assuming - and wrongfully so - that DC used the same system as Marvel does, that being everything answers to an Editor-in-Chief, which I assumed was what Dan Didio's role was. Apparently this is really wrong and while they elected an Editor-In-Chief in September, they hadn't done so before that for like, nearly a decade.
I know that I'm far from the only person that thought these things, but this doesn't really make me feel any better about it. Now I have no idea how they publish (if anyone could explain this to me, I would love it) but as far as I can tell, Dan Didio's still doing what he always did but they've got various creative officers. However, they've brought back the Editor-in-Chief position? And while I doubt (but again, tell me if I'm wrong) this changes too much in the grand scheme of things (because as long as Didio's there, he's going to hold the most power), apparently this guy was elected in... Winter of 2010. And also happens to be Bob Harass.
AHAHAHAHA NO FUCKING WONDER THAT EXPLAINS A LOT
Okay, to clarify on that - anything on Marvel that I like the best, it's easy to link it back to the 'publishing failure' event of the first Clone Saga. There was this small, false rumour once that they were considering giving Defalco power over DC (lolll) and maybe this has some sort of link to that rumour. In either case...
Well. Knowing that and looking at what's about to happen to DC, their current choice of how to 'reboot' the line makes a whole lot more sense. And, as always happens, now that it has a link back to the Clone Saga, pretty much 95% of my doubt has dissolved.
Everything that is good and wonderful about comics is connected to the Clone Saga and nobody will ever convince me anything different! I'm sure that sounds sarcastic, but it's not. I think my excitement for the next '52' has tripled here now that another person I trust has been put into power. It's not that I think that Harass is any less likely to fuck up than Didio or Johns is. (As much as I love the Clone Saga, I recognize it with all its screwups and part of why I like it so much is because of the screwups.) I also understand that the Clone Saga is far from the only thing Harass has ever worked on - and that he was not the only high power over it. It's just that when you find out that the writing style of a company shifting is directly linked to something else that was written just the way you like it, well, that's going to help anything out!
I'm in the minority, but I think that this reboot needs to happen (and I disagree with no choices I've heard so far, including dissolving the Kent marriage) and it's going to be really interesting to see what comes out of these three guys putting their heads together.
(Also, if I'm wrong about Marvel, please tell me as well? I'm pretty bummed at finding out Joe's stepped down and while I'm giving Axel Alonso benefit of the doubt, I'd really like to know that everything with one company doesn't answer to some guy I don't even know anything about.)
