I've been batting this around in my head the past few days. I've planned on writing an LJ post about this, you see, but it was really hard to know how to phrase it. I think I can do it now. I hope, anyway!
So, like the subject says, it was a misdiagnosis of brain damage (the accidental Depakote overdose a few years ago fooled everyone - I still arguably have damage from that, but it's sure not causing this). So, uh, what the hell was going on, then?
Yeah, exactly what's always been going on with me. Except neither my psych center or I were educated on it. They're not educated on dissociative disorders at all. They've told me before that I shouldn't be treated there, I belong at another kind of center because they have no idea what to do with me or my issues. But the government insists I have to go there, it has to be there, so everyone's sort of stuck. The best they can do is try to handle me like they handle schizophrenia, and that only works to a certain point since they are disorders of completely different types.
So, raise your hand if you knew that dissociative disorders are related to each other in a different way than the other psychiatric spectrums. I'm sure as hell not raising mine, nor is any of my doctors/therapists/etc. Anyway, to refresh on that, I have Dissociative Identity Disorder. I've had it my whole life, it started when I was four.
I guess even if you don't have the other dissociative disorders you can share symptoms of the others. I've done depersonalization many times. Many times. But Dissociative Amnesia is not something I've done before. Ever. Except now I have.
April 2011 to October 2011 was in a dissociative amnesia episode. It was not brain damage like everyone thought and my brain is not impaired anymore! This thing I thought was my fate for the rest of my life has gone away!
