So yeah, okay.
I marathonned the Soul Eater anime from start to finish. After literally two years of people telling me to stop dumbassing around and just watch it already. I'm not really sure how to tell which version I saw and I might be missing things since I don't watch Repeat Show (does this have anything added at all?) but I did really enjoy what I have.
I'm lj-cutting it from here. I tried to stick to generalities and not spoil anything but it's a long post and it's possible I just don't recognize that something is a spoiler. So... there we go. LJ-cut.
I watched dub rather than sub, which, I don't agree with some of their choices of line translation (thanks for fucking up Soul's cool line at the end of the Crona-Maka fight, guys) but I can't manage to watch the sub. If you have attachments to voice actors, skip over this to the next paragraph. Honestly, while the original voices fit perfect for me in the character songs, in the actual show they don't fit for me at all. I'm not sure what's off but just in general, I can't enjoy it. This is not me dissing quality. The original audio is great. I just can't get into it, that's all. (Original version of Maka singing the Excalibur song was much better, though. WHY DO I NOT HAVE AN AUDIO FILE OF THIS. Better question yet: why do I want it?!)
Mr. Skinbags was some freaky shit though oh my God make him go away and he's apparently exactly like a dog in part of this? Oh, okay. It's officially now my headcanon that Asura's MIA right now because he's chasing down paperboys and postal men. It makes as much sense as anything else.
Actually in some places I think they made far better choices than the manga has. But Okubo had input on this, didn't he? I swear I read that but it's not in the interviews I have, so...
Also the way they handled... um... a lot of things in this is total wish fulfillment. You can tell someone at Bones in went "we're going to fix this shit from the manga that's frustrating or sucks, now shut up." It's kind of awesome.
"Don't they realize yet that they're in a hole?"
The awesome is in a "I wish they hadn't kept this out" sort of way. For one, I wish they'd put in chapters 41 - 43, for example. I'd been really looking forward to seeing that animated and what they chose to do instead just felt like a big copout. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read those chapters, but as it stands, I was just very disappointed. And I really do not understand at all what happened with all the Eibon shit in the end.
But they did put Soul's piano playing in. I wish there was a way to get audio files for it. Well, there might be, my copies of the soundtracks aren't complete. But I don't remember it. Does anyone know? D:
I literally have waited since February of 2009 to hear this, because I told myself I wasn't allowed until I got unlazy and watched the anime. Well, I heard the dub's version. If the sub has a different version, I haven't heard that yet. But the depiction was fantastic and really literally shiver inducing. I'm sure part or all of that is because of how much I care for the character, but even from an unbiased point of view it was pretty great.
Also uh, Bones? I love you guys but you went a little too heavy on the imagery in Episode 50. I kept wanting to tell them that we get it already, Soul's mind is fucked. But haha, no, it just kept coming.
Buuut episodes 50 and 51 still remain my favourite and most respected episodes of anything out of Japan. I did watch those when they came out. I have rewatched them countless times. It's really just great.
I wish they could animate new things. I want to see an animation of chapter 87. It's.
It's.
Just.
Necessary.
Anyway I probably have other thoughts but i haven't slept in like a day, so I can't think too straight right now. So yeah, there's some of my thoughts. Now I just need to figure out what to watch next.
